The Raspberry Pi Al Kit combines the Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ expansion board and the Hailo-8L AI accelerator module to build AI vision applications that can be executed in real time, with low latency and low power consumption. Neural networks such as object detection, semantic and instance segmentation, pose estimation or facial feature detection are all executed on the Hailo-8L coprocessor, freeing the Raspberry Pi 5 CPU to perform other tasks. It provides a convenient, cost-effective and power-efficient way to integrate high-performance artificial intelligence.
The AI module is a neural network inference accelerator based on the Hailo-8L chip that supports 13 trillion operations per second (TOPS). It uses an M.2 2242 form factor and is installed in an M.2 HAT+. It seamlessly integrates the Raspberry Pi operating system and software, and is compatible with Raspberry Pi and third-party cameras.
When the Raspberry Pi 5 runs the new Raspberry Pi OS image, it automatically detects the Hailo module and makes the NPU available for AI computing tasks. The rpicam-apps camera application built into Raspberry Pi OS natively supports the AI module and automatically uses the NPU to run compatible post-processing tasks.
